It will take place in Jekyll Island GA Nov. 7-8. Proposals will be accepted starting February 15. Our invited speakers include: Dr. Sonia Nieto -- multicultural education (University of Massachusetts), Ms. Jo Gusman - reading (New Horizons in Education), Dr. Maria Coady - writing (University of Florida), and Dr. Chris Scott (GADOE). NOTE: This year we are offering a new presentation option -- Posters. This is a great option for those who do not want to speak for 50 minutes in front of a large audience. A number of posters will be placed in a room; the presenter(s) stand by the poster and discuss the content. Content can be anything from a classroom strategy that works to research. Important things to note: We've added a student rate Lunch on both Friday and Saturday is included in the registration fee. There is a specific survey question regarding vegetarian meals. Two hotel options are available, and you can get the conference rate for additional nights Jekyll Island is a great place to bring the family! It's lot of fun! The creator is Bill Zimmerman. Check out the info from him below: April Roberts Franklin County Schools ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A year ago I launched a new web site -- http:// www.makebeliefscomix.com -- where children and adults can create their own comic strips. They can select from 15 fun characters with different moods -- happy, sad, angry, worried ? and write words for blank talk and thought balloons to make their characters talk and think. There also are story ideas and prompts to help users create graphic stories. This site can be used by educators to teach language, reading and writing skills, and also for students in English-as-a-Second-Language programs to facilitate self-expression and storytelling, as well as computer literacy. It is now being used in 160 countries by educators. Some educational therapists use it with deaf and autistic people to help them understand concepts and communicate. Parents and children can create stories together, print them to create comic books or email them to friends and family. Others will find the site a resource to be creative, calm down and have fun. Because so many Spanish-speaking users asked us for the ability to write their cartoons in Spanish as well as in English, we recently upgraded the site to accept words written in Spanish, including appropriate accent marks. This can be a useful tool for someone who is learning Spanish as well as someone whose first language is Spanish. This feature is being expanded to other languages, such as French, Italian, German and Latin. I am hoping that you will share http://www.makebeliefscomix.com with your colleagues, teachers, students or readers of your publications and resource lists. The site is free with no advertising. Any help you might offer in getting word out about this project is very appreciated. As one who learned to read with comic books, I know that creating comic strips can help people tap into their creativity and practice their language and storytelling skills. The site is free and stems from my lifelong mission to create resources that help people find their voice and express themselves. I hope you like http://www.makebeliefscomix.com and will use it in your work and personal life. Your feedback is welcome and very helpful. Message-ID: <47AC42500200003E00011BA3@mailsrv4.gsu.edu> All, Does anyone know of a free or low cost summer ESOL/ high school program that would be appropriate for refugee teens, ages 15 - 20 from West Africa? The family of teens are originally from Liberia, but spent several years in Guinea and in other places as refugees. Their parents are deceased. They are currently enrolled as scholarship students at Holy Innocents School, where they are getting by to some extent with extensive help from volunteer tutors, but not getting ESOL. Their main tutor is leaving and they don't have money to pay for tutors. The concern is that they will fall behind in the summer. The oldest girl has better English skills and has a part-time job. The younger 3 have weaker English skills. All are floundering in at least one or two of their school subjects. It would also be helpful to have some kind of independent assessment of their English skills. They live in Dekalb County. Any suggestions that you have would be most appreciated. Thanks a lot! The College of Education at the University of West Georgia, Carrollton, GA, is hosting Learning Festival 08 (www.westga.edu/~festival) June 2-6 at which we expect about 500 K-12 teachers to participate. The overall goal of Learning Festival 2008 is to promote and celebrate classroom teaching and to assist teachers in realizing their contribution to the quality of life in our schools and communities. Learning Festival 2008 is a conference-style program, with multiple concurrent events. Of specific interest to us would be a strand Teaching ELLs in Mainstream Classrooms - Skills, strategies and activities that mainstream teachers can use to access ELLs (e.g. how second language is acquired, implementation of the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol, writing language objectives, teaching vocabulary critical in their content area) and work effectively with ESOL teachers (negotiating and sharing teaching responsibilities, and issues of power in a team teaching model). If you would like to share your ideas, there are two forums for presentation: Concurrent Sessions: Each of these sessions may be a lecture, demonstration, workshop, or panel for 50 minutes. In these sessions, authors present for about 35-40 minutes, followed by audience discussion for 10-15 minutes. Audio-visual equipment, such as a screen or overhead projector, desktop computers with PowerPoint software, is provided. Poster Sessions: Do you have unit or lesson plans or assessments that are exemplary? Would you like to share them with other teachers? Bring hard copies of these exemplars to share. Poster sessions combine the graphic display of materials with the opportunity for individualized, informal discussion of the research throughout a 1-hour session. Individual presenters set up displays representing their papers in a large area with other presenters. No audio-visual equipment is provided. Presenters wishing to use a PowerPoint-type presentation may plan on displaying the presentation from their own laptop computer screens. If you plan to use a laptop, please be sure the battery is charged, as power cannot be provided. Attendees will walk around the room, question presenters in an informal, informed, non-threatening forum.
