When I last looked into it (quite a few years ago), they had just increased the financial responsibility of sponsoring someone. As I remember, it made you financially responsible for the person for 10 years. Someone else may know more than I do. I would NOT do this without discussing it with an immigration attorney. Yes, it is sticking your neck out, but if you know the person to be responsible and resourceful, it might be very rewarding to you both. But I agree with Karen, you should speak to an immigration attorney first. They might be able to answer questions such as, "Would the sponsoree be responsible for ANY social programs once they are made legal? Medicaid? Food stamps? Social Security? Or what exactly does the law mean?" Get worst case scenarios. One thing I have heard is that you can only sponsor someone who has already been applied for by a family member. Can you actually apply for someone who is here illegally? (I'm not presuming your student's situation, Lisa, I'm just wondering about these things.) I was also thinking maybe the Latin American Association could assist with info....I'm not really up on what they do, but I was thinking they have something like a branch that deals with immigration issues. Anyone from the LAA care to comment?
